A Dragonfly Escort and a 31 Hour Sale

I know this will ruffle the feathers of some of my more seriously theological friends, but I fully believe God sends me special messages in ways I can understand, like heart-shaped rocks and exquisite sunsets and cardinal visits and red solo cups and, well, you get the picture. I have a fairly simple but very deep faith, and I believe God meets me where I am.

A few weeks ago, I was driving in downtown Olathe, preoccupied with some 5K logistic issues we were having. I whispered a prayer that we would experience some guidance about what to do, when I noticed a dragonfly flying just a few inches in front of my windshield. He (or she—I don’t know how to tell the difference) flew there for a few blocks, which was not long for me, but it must have felt like forever to him (or her). That’s it. There was no sky-written message, the dragonfly didn’t speak words to me (although that would have been WAY COOL, I never would have admitted that to you because, well, crazy). There was just a sense of peace and a reminder that we have not been doing this project on our own from the beginning but have been relying on the goodness and dedication of others and, personally, the steadfastness of our benevolent God.

The day after the dragonfly escort, Dale and I were at our favorite salad bar restaurant, and we were given the table tent number 31. Thirty-one is the number of Americans who were killed on August 6, 2011 on the special ops mission with call sign Extortion 17. There have been so many times when the number 31 pops up for us: 31 likes on a photo, $31 bill for gas, 31 Amazon boxes on the porch (my personal record), and they almost always make me giggle. When we were at a planning meeting recently and someone mentioned having a flash sale, I laughed, knowing it would have to be for 31 hours.
